Your clear coat is a finite resource. That is not a scare line — it is the reason careful correction exists as a discipline at all. Every pass of a pad refines a microscopic amount of the surface, so the only sensible question is how little you can take and still get the result the vehicle deserves.

Assessment before correction

Nothing is quoted, and no pad touches paint, until the finish has been read under proper lighting. Defects that look identical in a parking lot are frequently three different problems.

Least aggressive effective process

The right compound and pad combination is the mildest one that actually clears the defect. Reaching for the heaviest option first is speed, not skill.

Maximum removal is not the goal

Maximum defect removal is not automatically the best paint correction. The appropriate result, achieved with the least material interaction, is.

Modern clear coat is not one material. It varies between manufacturers, between models from the same manufacturer, between production plants, between panels on the same vehicle, and dramatically between factory paint and a refinished panel from a previous repair.

Two vehicles can look identical in the driveway and respond completely differently to the same pad, the same compound and the same machine speed. One clears in a single pass. The other hazes and needs a refinement stage that the first one did not.

Knowing which is which before you commit is the entire job. Everything else is equipment.

The product doesn’t make the decision. The person behind the machine does.

Two vehicles, the same colour family, the same year, can want completely different pad and abrasive combinations. That judgement is not stored in a bottle or a machine — it is stored in the person reading the panel.

Every job on a modern finish sits somewhere on this line. The skill is not in being able to reach the right-hand end. Almost anyone with a rotary can reach the right-hand end. The skill is in correctly identifying the furthest-left point that still delivers the result — and stopping there.

What Is Modern Paint Correction?

Paint correction is the controlled process of improving defects within the painted surface using professional machine polishing, abrasives and refinement technique. It is a precision process, not a cleaning one.

Three different things get confused with one another constantly, so here they are separated:

  • Washing cleans paint. It removes what is sitting on top of the surface.
  • Decontamination removes what has bonded to it — iron fallout, tar, embedded industrial particles that a wash mitt will not lift.
  • Paint correction improves defects that are in the finish itself — the marks you can still see after the vehicle is spotlessly clean and bone dry.
  • Ceramic coating protects the prepared finish afterward. It does not correct anything.

Defects that can usually be improved or removed by correction include swirl marks, light scratches, polishing haze, micro-marring, holograms, some water spotting, some chemical etching, sanding marks and oxidation where the paint system allows it.

Defects that correction cannot address include stone chips, anything that has gone through the clear coat into the colour, cracked or delaminating paint, and physical dents. Those are a different repair discipline — and in the case of chips, one this shop happens to specialise in.

Why Does My New Vehicle Already Have Swirl Marks?

Because a new vehicle is touched a great many times before you ever see it, and every single physical contact with paint is an opportunity for a defect. Age describes the vehicle. It does not describe the finish.

This is the question that brings most modern-vehicle owners to this page, usually with a certain amount of indignation attached. It is a fair reaction. Here is the honest explanation, and it is not a conspiracy.

Between the end of the paint line and your driveway, a vehicle is handled at the plant, loaded, transported, unloaded, moved around a compound, stored outdoors, moved again, cleaned of transport film, parked on a lot through whatever weather is happening, wiped down for photographs, walked past by shoppers, test-driven, and then prepared for delivery. It may be washed and dried several times in that sequence by several different people using several different towels.

None of that requires anyone to be careless. It only requires the ordinary reality that dust is abrasive, towels pick things up, and dry wiping a dusty panel drags grit across clear coat. Do that a dozen times in a dozen places and you get the fine, circular, light-catching scratching that people call swirl marks.

New describes the vehicle’s age. It does not guarantee a defect-free finish.

Two more things worth knowing. First, factory finishing itself sometimes includes localised sanding and polishing to correct a flaw on the line, and traces of that work can occasionally still be visible under strong directional light. Second, a vehicle that has already been machine polished by someone in a hurry can arrive with holograms — which look worse under the sun than the swirls they were meant to remove.

Does a Brand-New Vehicle Need Paint Correction?

Not necessarily. Some new vehicles arrive in genuinely excellent condition. Others need light refinement. Others carry substantial wash damage, sanding marks or isolated scratches. Inspection is what tells you which one you have.

Anyone who answers this question before seeing the vehicle is selling, not assessing. There is a real range of outcomes here, and Jason has recommended every one of them:

  • No meaningful correction required. Decontaminate, prepare, protect. It happens.
  • A light polish to lift dealership wash marks and bring the gloss up.
  • Targeted correction on the panels that actually have a problem — often the hood, roof and horizontal surfaces, because that is where dust settles and towels do the most work.
  • A full one-step correction across the vehicle.
  • Multi-stage work on specific areas only, with a lighter process everywhere else.

We don’t correct new paint just because we can.

There is a commercial argument for always recommending the biggest job. There is no honest argument for it, and a vehicle that gets a three-stage correction it did not need has spent clear coat it will want later.

Scratches, swirls and defects

Most of what follows is invisible in a photograph taken in diffuse light. That is the whole problem with diagnosing paint from pictures — and the reason an assessment happens under a single directional light source instead.

Can Paint Correction Remove Scratches?

Often, yes — when the scratch sits within the correctable portion of the finish. If it runs deeper than that, removing it completely would mean taking away more material than is appropriate, and improvement becomes the better answer than elimination.

Think of a scratch in terms of how far down it goes:

  • Surface markingVery fine marring sitting in the top of the clear coat. Usually clears readily.
  • Clear-coat scratchContained within the clear layer. Frequently correctable, depending on depth and how much clear coat is there to work with.
  • Deep clear-coat scratchCorrectable in principle, but the material cost of chasing it to zero may not be worth paying. This is where judgement earns its money.
  • Through to the colour coatPast correction. The clear is breached, and polishing cannot put it back.
  • Primer or substrate visibleA refinishing or touch-in repair, not a polishing job.

Improvement is sometimes smarter than elimination.

A scratch reduced by eighty or ninety per cent on a panel with its protective layer intact is usually a better outcome than a scratch removed completely from a panel that has been thinned to get there. That is not a compromise. It is the correct call.

How Do I Know if a Scratch Is Too Deep?

The fingernail test gives you a rough indication at home — if your nail catches noticeably in the scratch, it is likely deeper than a polish will safely reach. It is a useful signal, not a measurement.

Run a clean fingernail lightly across the mark, perpendicular to it. If it glides over, the defect is likely shallow. If it catches, there is real depth there.

Other signs that a scratch has gone past the correctable range:

  • a visible colour change along the mark, or white showing through a coloured panel
  • primer, plastic or bare metal visible in the base of the scratch
  • a sharp, defined edge rather than a soft one
  • obvious paint loss rather than paint distortion
  • the mark staying equally visible from every angle and in every light — shallow defects tend to appear and disappear as the light moves

The fingernail test tells you whether to be hopeful. It does not tell a technician what to do. That takes inspection under controlled lighting, on a clean panel, ideally with gauge readings from the surrounding area for context.

Can Swirl Marks Be Permanently Removed?

The existing ones, generally yes — correction can improve swirl marks dramatically or clear them entirely. But nothing makes paint immune to new ones. Swirls come back through washing, not through the correction failing.

Swirl marks are fine scratches distributed across the finish in no particular pattern, which become extremely visible when a single strong light source — the sun, a streetlight, an LED inspection lamp — reflects off them at the right angle. In diffuse daylight the same paint can look perfect.

They are almost always mechanical in origin:

  • automatic brush washes and the recycled grit they carry
  • a wash mitt that has been dropped, or used from the bottom of the panel up
  • drying towels that have picked up contamination
  • wiping dust off a dry panel — the single most common cause on daily drivers
  • snow brushes on winter mornings, which is a specifically Saskatchewan contribution
  • previous machine polishing that was never properly refined

What Are Polishing Holograms?

Holograms — also called buffer trails — are fine directional scratches left in the paint by a machine polishing process that was never properly refined. They are a finishing failure, not a wear pattern.

They appear as curved light patterns, shadows, trails or ghost-like marks that seem to move as you walk around the vehicle. They are most obvious in direct sunlight, and they can be almost invisible under diffuse shop lighting — which is precisely how they get delivered to customers.

The mechanism is straightforward. A rotary polisher spins in one fixed direction. Used with an aggressive pad or compound, or with too much pressure, speed or heat, it leaves a consistent directional abrasion pattern in the clear coat. If the work is then followed with the appropriate refining stages, that pattern is removed and the finish comes up clean. If it is not, the pattern stays.

A car can look glossy under shop lights and still be poorly finished.

Holograms can generally be corrected, and doing so is usually a refinement operation rather than a heavy one — which is a good outcome, because it costs comparatively little clear coat. If your vehicle came back from somewhere else looking spectacular in the bay and disappointing in the sun, this is very likely what you are looking at.

What Is Micro-Marring?

Micro-marring is extremely fine surface marking introduced during polishing or by improper contact with the paint. It can reduce clarity and depth even after every obvious scratch has been removed.

It is the reason a correction can technically succeed and still look wrong. The swirls are gone. The scratches are gone. And the paint reads slightly dull, slightly grey, slightly lacking the wet look it should have — because the surface is covered in marking too fine to identify individually but dense enough to scatter light.

Causes include an abrasive that did not break down properly, a pad that was too aggressive for the finishing stage, a pad that had loaded up with spent product, or simply a soft clear coat that marks more readily than the process allowed for.

The answer is a proper refinement stage: a finer abrasive, a softer pad, lower speed, and inspection between passes. On dark colours this stage is not optional. It is where the job is won or lost.

Why Does My Paint Look Hazy?

Haze has several completely different causes that look similar from three feet away. Diagnosing it generically is how paint gets treated aggressively for a problem that would have wiped off.

Possible causes include:

  • Polishing haze left by a correction stage that was never refined
  • Micro-marring, as above
  • Oxidation, where the paint system has degraded from UV exposure over years — more common on older and single-stage finishes than on modern clear-coated ones
  • Residue from a product that has not fully wiped off, or has cured unevenly on the surface
  • Bonded contamination sitting on top of otherwise healthy paint, which decontamination removes without touching a polisher
  • Previous aggressive correction that has thinned or disturbed the surface
  • Environmental damage, including widespread fine etching from fallout or hard water

Some of those are removed with chemistry alone. One of them is a warning sign that the panel needs care rather than correction. Telling them apart requires the vehicle clean, dry and under controlled lighting — not a photograph and not a guess.

Is Paint Correction Safe for Factory Clear Coat?

Properly performed correction can safely improve suitable factory paint. What makes it safe is not the machine — it is the inspection, the testing and the restraint applied around the machine.

What that actually involves on a modern finish:

  • Inspection under directional and diffuse light, on clean, decontaminated paint
  • Panel history — readings and visual cues that suggest a repaint, a blend or a previous correction
  • Controlled test area before committing to the vehicle
  • Reading paint behaviour — how quickly it clears, whether it hazes, how it responds to heat
  • Defect depth versus the material available
  • Edges and body lines, where coatings are commonly thinner and where burn-through happens
  • Heat management — softened clear coat marks more easily and behaves unpredictably
  • Appropriate abrasives for the stage, not one product doing every job

Clear coat should be managed, not sacrificed.

Does Paint Correction Remove Clear Coat?

Yes — abrasive correction refines a microscopic amount of the uppermost paint surface. That is how it works. The objective is not zero material interaction; the objective is to remove as little as necessary to produce the appropriate result.

Anyone who tells you their polishing removes nothing at all is either using filler products that wash out, or is not being straight with you. Abrasives abrade. That is the mechanism.

The honest version is more reassuring than the marketing version anyway. A defect lives in the very top of the clear coat. Correction refines the surface down past the base of that defect so that light stops catching on its edges. Done carefully, on a finish with normal material to work with, that is a small fraction of what is there.

Remove as little as necessary to produce the appropriate result.

Which is why aggressiveness is not a proxy for skill. Anyone can select a heavier compound and a firmer pad. Correctly identifying that the vehicle in front of you does not need one — and being willing to say so when a bigger job would have paid better — is the part that takes thirty years.

Restraint is not caution. Jason is not hesitant about correction. He is deliberate about it, which is a different thing entirely.

How Thick Is Modern Clear Coat?

There is no single number that applies to every vehicle. Automotive paint systems vary by manufacturer, model, plant, panel and repair history — and a gauge reading of total film build does not by itself tell you how much clear coat is left.

Published industry figures give a sense of the scale rather than a rule. Coating-gauge manufacturer DeFelsko notes that most factory paint jobs fall somewhere around one hundred to one hundred and eighty microns of total film build, that unusually thick readings often indicate a panel has been repainted, and that many manufacturers recommend removing no more than roughly eight microns of clear coat because of the UV inhibitors it carries. Independent detailing training material also reports that OEM clear coat has generally trended thinner over the last two decades, not thicker.

Take from that what actually matters to you as an owner: the protective layer on a modern vehicle is thin, it is not getting thicker, and it carries the UV protection for everything underneath it.

Now the important technical caveat. A standard paint depth gauge measures total film build — primer, colour and clear together. It does not separate the layers. So a healthy-looking total reading can still sit over a clear coat that has already been corrected twice, and an unusually high reading usually means additional material from a refinish rather than extra protection.

A number on a gauge is information, not permission to polish aggressively.

Gauges are genuinely valuable — particularly for spotting anomalies, identifying likely refinished panels and flagging areas that need a more careful approach. They do not replace judgement, and on this page you should be suspicious of anyone who implies they do.

Can My Vehicle Be Paint Corrected More Than Once?

Potentially, yes. There is no universal number of safe corrections, because it depends entirely on what has already been taken and how much is left.

The variables that decide it:

  • the paint system the vehicle left the factory with
  • its starting condition and how it has been maintained
  • whether it has been corrected before, and how aggressively
  • whether any panels have been refinished, and how the refinish was polished
  • the current defects and how deep they sit
  • how aggressive any future correction is

Which brings the point back around: the strongest argument against unnecessary aggressive correction is that it spends something your vehicle may need in five years. A vehicle that has had three restrained corrections is in better shape than one that has had a single heavy one.

Stages and process

What Is One-Step Paint Correction?

A one-step correction uses a single primary machine polishing stage designed to improve defects while finishing to an appropriate level of gloss. On the right paint it is not a compromise — it is the correct answer.

The stage does two jobs at once, typically with an abrasive designed to cut initially and then refine as it breaks down. On a finish with light to moderate defects, a well-executed one-step can lift the great majority of what is visible and leave the paint finished properly.

It has become fashionable to treat one-step as the budget option, and that is a misunderstanding worth correcting. On a late-model vehicle with delivery swirls and not much else, a one-step frequently delivers ninety per cent of the visible improvement of a multi-stage job, for less time, less money and considerably less material.

What it will not do is clear deep defects. If the paint needs more, the test panel says so before anything is committed to.

What Is Multi-Stage Paint Correction?

Multi-stage correction uses an initial cutting stage to address more substantial defects, followed by one or more refinement stages that restore clarity and clear the haze or micro-marring the first stage leaves behind.

The two stages have genuinely different jobs:

  • Correction stageA heavier abrasive and pad combination targeting the defects that a single refined pass cannot reach. It works, and it leaves its own light marking behind.
  • Refinement stageA finer abrasive and softer pad that removes the marking from the cutting stage and brings clarity, depth and gloss all the way up. Skipping it is exactly how holograms end up on a customer’s hood.

Some vehicles need a further stage between those two. Some need multi-stage work on the horizontal panels and a single stage everywhere else. Prescribing a fixed number of stages before the vehicle has been inspected is guessing with a price attached.

Is Three-Stage Correction Better Than One-Step Correction?

Not automatically. More stages mean more processing and more material interaction. If a vehicle reaches the appropriate result with less aggressive work, the extra stages buy very little and cost something real.

Stage count is a description of the process, not a grade of quality. A three-stage correction on paint that needed one step is not a premium service — it is an unnecessary one, and it is being paid for twice: once at the counter and once out of the vehicle’s remaining clear coat.

The best correction is not the one with the most steps. It is the one your paint actually needs.

Where a genuinely neglected finish is concerned — a black truck that has been through an automatic wash weekly for six years, say — multi-stage is very likely the right call, and Jason will recommend it without hesitation. The point is that the vehicle decides, not the package name.

Dark and black paint

Why Does Black Paint Show Everything?

Because black paint reflects light almost like a mirror, so any distortion in the surface shows up as a visible interruption. It is primarily a visibility problem, not a durability one.

A silver or white panel scatters light. Fine scratches in the surface get lost in that scatter. A black panel returns a comparatively clean reflection, so every swirl, towel mark, water spot, dust particle, hologram and trace of polishing haze interrupts something you can see clearly.

The same defects exist on the silver car parked beside it. You simply are not looking at them.

This cuts both ways, and the good half is worth saying: a correctly corrected and properly refined black finish looks better than anything else on the road. The depth is not available on lighter colours. It is just that it has to be right.

Is Black Paint Harder to Paint Correct?

Colour by itself does not determine paint hardness — that comes from the paint system, not the pigment. But black makes finishing defects far easier to see, which raises the standard the refinement stage has to hit.

The common claim that black paint is inherently softer does not hold up as a universal rule. Hardness varies enormously between manufacturers and paint systems regardless of colour, and there are hard black finishes and very soft light ones.

What is true is that black is unforgiving of process. A refinement stage that would pass unnoticed on a metallic grey will be visible from across a parking lot on black. That means slower work, more inspection passes, finer finishing steps and more time under the lights — which is a real difference in the job even though the paint itself may be no harder.

Black paint doesn’t forgive bad finishing.

A word to a specific group of owners

Own a Black Vehicle?

You already know. Everything shows.

Swirls. Dust. Water spots. Drying marks. Holograms from whoever polished it last. The wash that looked fine in the driveway and looked like a disaster the first time the sun came out at the right angle.

The answer to that is not simply more aggressive polishing — more aggressive polishing on black paint is how holograms get installed in the first place. The answer is a correctly judged correction, followed by a refinement stage that is actually done properly, followed by a wash process that stops putting the marks straight back.

Bring it in and look at it under proper directional lighting with Jason. You will see what is genuinely there rather than what the driveway sun implies, and you will get a straight answer about how much of it is worth chasing.

On dark paint the refinement stage is where the job is decided. A finishing pass that would go unnoticed on a metallic grey will be visible from across a parking lot on black — which is why this work is slower and why it is worth doing properly.

Where the damage came from

Can Dealership Swirl Marks Be Removed?

Often, yes — delivery-preparation swirls are usually shallow, and they frequently respond to a light or one-step correction rather than anything heavy.

No accusation is required here. A vehicle may be washed and dried several times between arriving on the lot and being handed over, often quickly, often outdoors, often by whoever is available. That is the nature of moving inventory, and it is not unique to any brand or any dealership.

The practical consequence is a lot of light contact with paint in a short period, which produces exactly the kind of fine surface marking that shows up under a streetlight on the drive home.

Some enthusiast buyers ask their dealership not to wash or polish the vehicle before delivery, because they have already arranged professional preparation. If you are the sort of person reading this page before collection, it is worth knowing that option exists — presented as an enthusiast’s choice, not as advice everyone needs to follow. Most buyers will be perfectly happy having the marks corrected afterwards instead.

What Are Factory Sanding Marks?

Localised sanding and polishing is a normal part of automotive paint finishing and defect repair during manufacturing. Occasionally traces of that work remain visible under certain lighting on a delivered vehicle.

When a flaw appears in the paint on a production line — a piece of dirt in the clear, a run, a texture inconsistency — the panel is not necessarily repainted. It may be sanded and polished locally to correct it, which is a legitimate and routine process.

If that final polishing stage was slightly under-refined, the sanding traces can remain faintly visible: usually a patch of straight, parallel, directional marking on an otherwise clean panel, most often on horizontal surfaces and most often visible only under a strong single light source.

This is not evidence that a vehicle is defective. It is evidence that a specific area received attention on the line. Whether correcting it is worthwhile depends on how visible it is, how deep the traces run and how much material is available around it — which is, once again, an inspection question.

Can Water Spots Be Removed?

It depends entirely on what the spot actually is. “Water spot” is one phrase covering at least four different conditions, ranging from something that wipes off to something that is permanent.

  • Surface mineral depositsDissolved solids left behind when water evaporates, sitting on top of the paint. Frequently removed with appropriate chemistry and no abrasive work at all.
  • Bonded depositsDeposits that have hardened onto the surface. Usually require a dedicated water-spot or acidic treatment before anything else is attempted.
  • EtchingWhere the deposit has chemically marked the clear coat itself, leaving a ring or crater you can feel. This needs correction, and it is correctable when it is shallow.
  • Severe etchingDeep enough that removing it entirely would cost more material than is appropriate. Improvement rather than elimination, or refinishing.

“Water spot” describes what you see, not necessarily what has happened to the paint.

This distinction has real money attached to it. Reaching for a polisher on deposits that would have dissolved with the correct chemical treatment spends clear coat for nothing — which is precisely the failure this page keeps arguing against.

Can Bird-Dropping Etching Be Removed?

Shallow etching often corrects out. Deeper etching may not, and it depends heavily on how long the contamination sat there and how hot the panel got while it did.

Bird droppings are acidic, and industry sources commonly cite a pH in the region of three to four and a half — acidic enough to attack the clear coat. The uric acid content is also close to insoluble in water, which is why a quick rinse moves the visible material but leaves the aggressive part working on the paint.

Heat makes it considerably worse. A warm panel expands slightly and the softened clear coat can mould around the deposit; as it cools and contracts, the shape of the dropping is effectively locked into the surface. Detailers generally distinguish between shallow topical staining, which usually polishes out, and deeper fracture-type etching, which frequently does not.

The practical advice is unglamorous and it is the most valuable thing in this section: remove bird contamination as soon as you find it, with a dedicated cleaner and proper lubrication rather than a dry cloth, because dried droppings contain grit that will scratch on its own. A dropping addressed the same morning is usually nothing. The same dropping left on a hot panel for a weekend can be a correction job, and occasionally a refinishing one.

Can Saskatchewan Roads Damage Modern Paint?

Yes, though it is worth separating two different things — contamination that sits on or bonds to paint, and physical impact damage that removes it. Correction addresses the first. It cannot address the second.

What a vehicle here is exposed to across a year:

  • road film and traffic grime through the wet months
  • winter road treatments and de-icing materials
  • brake and rail dust settling as embedded iron particles
  • agricultural and construction dust on rural and highway routes
  • insect residue, which is acidic and does etch if left
  • tree sap and organic fallout in summer
  • the frequent seasonal washing that winter driving demands — itself a leading cause of swirl marks
  • gravel and highway debris

Most of that list is handled by proper decontamination, not by abrasives — which is why decontamination comes before any correction decision is made rather than after.

Gravel and highway debris are the exception, and they belong in a different category entirely. Paint correction removes defects in paint. It cannot replace paint that is missing. For that, see stone chips below, and for winter specifically, Winter Defence.

Panels, chips and deeper damage

Can a Repainted Panel Be Paint Corrected?

Potentially, yes — but refinished panels frequently behave differently from factory paint, and they need to be identified before they are treated, not during.

A refinished panel can differ from the factory finish beside it in almost every respect that matters:

  • Hardness. Refinish clear coats can be softer or harder than OEM depending on the system and how it was cured.
  • Thickness. Often noticeably greater, because additional layers were applied over the original.
  • Sanding history. The panel may already have been sanded and machine polished by the body shop.
  • Blend edges. Where a repair fades into an adjacent panel, the clear can be thinner and considerably less tolerant.
  • Existing defects. Some panels arrive with sanding marks or holograms already in them from the refinish process.

This is why a technician may quite reasonably treat one panel differently from the one next to it. It is not inconsistency — it is responding to two different surfaces. Unusually high gauge readings and differences in how the paint clears under the pad are both useful signals that a panel has history.

Can Paint Correction Fix Stone Chips?

No. A stone chip is missing paint. A polisher cannot put back material that is no longer there, and no amount of correction will change that.

This is the clearest line on the whole page and it is worth being blunt about, because chips and scratches get discussed as though they are the same category of problem. They are not. A scratch is a deformation in paint that is still present. A chip is an absence.

Filling that absence is a refinishing operation: cleaning the chip, colour-matching the paint, building it back up and levelling the repair. Mercenary Auto Care specialises in it — permanent paint chip repair has been part of the shop since 2004, colour matched through Duxone Paint Systems by Axalta with a digital spectrophotometer against the manufacturer’s formula database rather than eyeballed with a touch-up pen.

Scratches, swirls and chips?

Have Jason assess all of it at the same time. Chip repair is best done in the same visit as correction, before any protection goes on — sealing a coating over an unrepaired chip locks the problem in.

Can Deep Scratches Be Repaired Without Repainting?

Sometimes they can be substantially improved. Some are candidates for a localised repair. Some genuinely require refinishing, and pretending otherwise does the customer no favours.

The realistic outcomes, in order of how deep the damage runs:

  • Improve by correctionThe scratch is within the clear coat. Correction reduces or removes it depending on depth and available material.
  • Soften and reduceThe scratch is deep in the clear but not through it. Edges are softened and visibility dramatically reduced, deliberately stopping short of complete removal.
  • Localised repairThe clear is breached in a contained area. A targeted repair may be the right route, then refinement around it.
  • RefinishingThe damage runs into the colour or beyond, or covers too large an area. This is body-shop work, and the honest answer is to say so.

Sometimes “this needs paint” is the right answer.

Paint correction is not an alternative to every body-shop repair, and a shop that presents it that way will eventually deliver a disappointing result to somebody. Better to hear it before the work starts.

New delivery

Just Bought It?

Before you commit to long-term protection, let Jason inspect what you actually received. A ceramic coating is optically clear — whatever is in the paint on the day it goes on is what you are protecting for the life of the coating.

What gets checked on a new delivery:

  • Delivery and lot-wash swirl marks
  • Water spotting and mineral deposits
  • Factory sanding traces
  • Polishing haze and holograms from previous machine work
  • Isolated scratches from handling
  • Bonded contamination and industrial fallout
  • Transport-related marking
  • Evidence a panel has already been refinished

Sometimes the answer is that the paint is in genuinely good shape, it needs decontamination and preparation only, and the money is better spent on the coating than on correcting a problem that is not there. That is a legitimate outcome of an assessment and you will be told so plainly.

Correction and protection

Should a New Vehicle Be Paint Corrected Before Ceramic Coating?

Only if the finish needs correcting. Every vehicle needs to be properly washed, decontaminated, inspected and prepared before a coating goes on. Not every vehicle needs abrasive correction as part of that.

This is where a lot of coating work goes wrong in both directions. Coating over visible defects locks them in for the life of the product. But automatically selling a multi-stage correction with every coating booking spends clear coat on vehicles that did not need it.

The correct sequence on a new or late-model vehicle:

  • Wash thoroughly, with pH-neutral chemistry
  • Decontaminate as required — iron, tar, bonded contaminants
  • Inspect under proper lighting, on clean dry paint
  • Correct what genuinely warrants correcting, at the least aggressive level that works
  • Panel wipe so nothing is hiding the true finish
  • Coat

Worth noting that this is not a Mercenary house rule. Gtechniq’s own published application guidance for Crystal Serum Light is to wash, decontaminate and, if needed, correct the paint first. The manufacturer builds the conditional in.

Correct what needs correcting. Then protect the result.

Will Ceramic Coating Hide Swirls and Scratches?

No. A coating can influence gloss and how light behaves on the surface, but it is not a corrective product and it should never be presented as an alternative to correction.

Modern ceramic coatings apply an extremely thin layer — a fraction of the thickness of the clear coat beneath. There is simply not enough material there to fill a scratch, and the products are formulated for optical clarity rather than for filling.

What tends to happen in practice is the opposite of what people hope for. A coating raises gloss and increases the sharpness of reflections, and sharper reflections make surface defects more obvious, not less.

Protection is not correction.

They are two related but genuinely distinct services, and the value of the second depends on the quality of the first.

Should Paint Correction Be Done Before Paint Protection Film?

Generally, the paint should be in the condition you want before film goes over it, because the finish underneath becomes far harder to access afterwards. That does not mean every vehicle needs aggressive correction first.

Film is a long-term install. Whatever the surface looks like on the day of installation is what sits under it, and correcting it later means removing and replacing film. So the sensible order is to establish the paint condition first.

But “establish the condition” covers a wide range. On a brand-new vehicle in good order that may be nothing more than a thorough decontamination and preparation. On a two-year-old daily driver it may be a one-step. On something that has been polished badly by somebody else, it may be more.

This section is educational. Mercenary Auto Care’s current published service lines are paint correction, Gtechniq ceramic coating, permanent paint chip repair and paint restoration — film installation is not among them, and this page is not implying otherwise.

Can a Ceramic-Coated Vehicle Be Paint Corrected?

Potentially, yes — but machine correction will generally compromise or remove the coating in the area worked, so the corrected areas will usually need recoating afterwards.

A coating is a sacrificial layer bonded to the paint. Abrasive work on top of it removes it in the same pass that addresses the defect underneath. There is no method of polishing through a coating to the paint below and leaving the coating intact.

What needs evaluating before anything is decided:

  • which coating was applied, and how it is performing
  • whether the defect is in the coating or in the paint — these look identical and are treated completely differently
  • whether the whole vehicle needs work or one panel does
  • whether the coating has any remaining guarantee period, and what a correction does to it
  • how much clear coat is available beneath

Coating behaviour varies by product, so nothing here should be assumed to apply to every coating on the market. Bring the paperwork if you have it — knowing which product went on and when changes the conversation considerably.

Afterwards

How Long Does Paint Correction Last?

Defects that have been properly removed do not grow back. But new ones can be introduced the very next weekend, so the durability of a correction is really a question about how the vehicle is washed afterwards.

This surprises people, and it is the most useful thing on this page for anyone deciding whether correction is worth the money. Correction has no expiry date of its own. A corrected panel that is never touched again stays corrected.

What ends a correction is contact. One trip through a brush wash. One dry wipe of a dusty hood. One drying towel that got dropped and picked back up. Any of those can put fresh marking into paint that was flawless an hour earlier.

Correction fixes yesterday’s damage. Your wash process determines tomorrow’s.

Which is a large part of why a ceramic coating is worth considering alongside correction: a slick, chemically resistant surface releases dirt more readily and is more tolerant of the wash process than bare clear coat. It does not make paint scratch-proof, and nothing does — but it changes the odds on every wash for years.

How Should I Wash My Vehicle After Paint Correction?

Carefully, and with clean media. The wash process is the single biggest factor in how long the result survives — more important than the products and considerably more important than how often you do it.

The practical version:

  • Avoid automatic brush washes entirely. They are the fastest way to undo correction work.
  • Use a proper pH-neutral automotive shampoo, not dish soap.
  • Use clean wash media and a two-bucket method or equivalent, so grit lifted off the vehicle does not go straight back onto it.
  • Wash top-down, and treat the lower panels last with separate media — that is where the abrasive material lives.
  • Never wipe dust off a dry panel. This is the most common cause of swirl marks on well-cared-for vehicles.
  • Dry with clean, plush microfibre, gently, or use filtered air where you can.
  • Remove bird droppings, sap and insect residue promptly, with lubrication.
  • Follow the coating-specific maintenance instructions if the vehicle is coated — they exist for a reason and they differ between products.

How Long Does Modern Vehicle Paint Correction Take?

It depends on the vehicle and the paint, which is why no honest number can be given before an inspection. Correction work is measured in days rather than hours on anything substantial.

The variables that move the timeline:

  • vehicle size and panel count
  • starting paint condition
  • colour, and how much the refinement stage has to hit
  • how the paint responds — some finishes clear in one pass, some fight
  • defect severity and distribution
  • the correction objective agreed at assessment
  • one-step versus multi-stage
  • isolated scratches needing individual attention
  • ceramic coating preparation and cure time
  • chip repair in the same visit
  • previous body repairs needing a different approach

You get a realistic window once the paint has been read, and if the work is going to run past what was discussed you hear about it before it happens, not on the invoice.

Cost, and knowing when to stop

How Much Does Paint Correction Cost in Regina?

Mercenary Auto Care charges $125 per hour of service performed. Correction is priced by the hour because paint condition, not vehicle size, determines how much work a job actually takes.

Flat packages are easier to buy and worse at describing reality. Consider two vehicles the same size:

A six-month-old car with light dealership swirl marks. Garage kept. Washed properly. Realistically a decontamination and a single refined stage, with a couple of areas needing individual attention.

A six-year-old black truck that has been through an automatic wash most weeks since new, with etching on the horizontal panels and holograms from a previous polish. A completely different job.

Same vehicle size does not mean same paint condition.

Charging both of those the same flat price means one of them is subsidising the other. Hourly means you pay for the work your vehicle actually needs.

You get a realistic estimate of hours before anything starts. What the hour buys: the walk-around, the paint reading, the decontamination, the test panel, the correction, the refinement stage, the panel wipe and the final walk under the lights. Every hour billed is an hour of hands on your vehicle.

When Should a Scratch Be Left Partially Visible?

When removing it completely would cost more material than the result is worth. On a deep defect, the last fraction of visible improvement is the most expensive fraction in clear coat — and it is frequently not worth buying.

This is the section that will either make sense to you immediately or sound like an excuse. Here is why it is neither.

Correction works by refining the surface until light stops catching on the edges of a defect. A shallow defect needs very little. A deep one needs progressively more, and the deeper it goes the more material each remaining increment of improvement costs — not evenly, but steeply.

So on a genuinely deep scratch there is a point where the responsible thing is to:

  • soften the edges so light no longer catches sharply
  • reduce visibility dramatically — often to the point where you have to know where to look
  • stop at a safe point rather than at zero
  • preserve the clear coat around it, on that panel, for the rest of the vehicle’s life

Chasing the last five per cent of a scratch is not worth sacrificing the paint around it.

The five per cent is illustrative, not a service measurement — nobody is measuring scratches in percentages. The principle is the point.

Knowing when to stop is part of paint correction.

You will be shown where that line was drawn and why, under the lights, at the end of the job. Not discovered later.

The order of work, and why it is in this order

How Jason Approaches Modern Paint

Seven steps. The first three happen before anything touches the paint, which is the part most people are surprised by and the part that protects the vehicle.

  1. Inspect

    Under proper lighting, on clean, decontaminated paint. Identify swirls, scratches, water spotting, haze, sanding traces, evidence of previous polishing and any indicators that a panel has been refinished.

  2. Understand the goal

    A daily driver, an enthusiast vehicle, a new-delivery correction, ceramic coating preparation or a cosmetic restoration are five different objectives. They do not all justify the same process, and the objective is agreed before the process is chosen.

  3. Evaluate

    Work out how aggressive the process actually needs to be — which is a decision about the paint in front of him, not about what was booked over the phone.

  4. Test

    A controlled test area, where appropriate, to confirm how this specific paint responds before committing the whole vehicle to a process. This is the step fast shops skip, and it is the step that protects your clear coat.

  5. Correct

    Using the least aggressive combination capable of producing the appropriate result. Panel by panel, with heat managed and edges and body lines treated with the care they need.

  6. Refine

    Restore clarity and remove any haze, micro-marring or polishing trails the correction stage introduced. On dark colours this is where the job is actually decided.

  7. Protect

    Panel wipe so nothing is hiding the true finish, then the protection that suits how the vehicle is used — for most customers here, a Gtechniq ceramic coating.

Your paint determines the process. Not a package name.

Before you call

What this page will not tell you

It will not tell you what your vehicle needs. Nothing written in advance can, and any shop that quotes a correction from a phone call and a photograph is guessing at your expense.

It will not promise that every defect on your vehicle can be removed. Some cannot, and you will be told which on the day rather than at the end.

And it will not tell you that correction is always the answer. Some vehicles that arrive here leave with decontamination, protection and no abrasive work at all, because that was genuinely the right call.

What it should have told you is how the decision gets made, and what a careful one looks like.

Modern paint still deserves restraint. A vehicle does not automatically need an aggressive correction simply because defects are visible. The job is to determine what is actually wrong, how far it should be corrected, what should be preserved, and what protection makes sense afterwards.
